How to do – Flood Management

We all have been in situations where we have felt helpless when it comes to Flooding. Let us start with a WHY first. Why we need flood management.

Floods are the number one natural disaster in India, causing much damage in our country. According to the National Disaster Management Authority, India, “An average every year, 75 lakh hectares of land is affected, 1600 lives are lost and the damage caused to crops, houses and public utilities is Rs 1805 crores, due to floods.”

Flood management thus becomes a very essential part of the disaster management first responders plan.

We have seen the Disaster Mitigation responders use sandbags. Sandbagging is a flood prevention technique that has been around for centuries. Although it uses a whole lot of manpower, Sandbagging is capable of diverting moving water. Building an effective sandbag wall to divert the moving water is very labor intensive and costly.

With UrbaDam, the self inflating sandless sandbag, time, money and effort is saved. It is easier to maneuver, lift and place. It weighs 320 grams when dry and around 20kg when energized (wet state).

A single man army is able to make a wall of UrbaDam sandbags, whereas to make a wall of traditional sandbags, it will take 8-10 people depending on the requirement.

UrbaDam bag contains biodegradable superabsorbent polymer inside a hydrophilic, non-woven cover which absorbs water upto 90% capacity in less than 3 minutes. Once the water is absorbed it is suspended in the bag and acts just like a traditional sandbag to restrict water.

UrbaDam is clean, compact and lightweight so they can be stored anywhere close to flash flooding prone areas or accidental water damage. With its self-inflating water absorption property, UrbaDam creates an effective, easy to use flood control barrier. As water comes into contact with the polymer, it turns into a gel causing the bag to swell.

  1. URBADAM seems a feasible and quick solution for sudden flooding, diverting run-off water… can these bags be reused?
